Wright Paynter Shill, Sr.
Wright P. Shill Sr.was just months old when the Shill family moved from Croydon, Utah in the spring of 1880 to Lehi, Arizona. At that time Lehi was a small settlement established in 1877 by Mormon pioneers under the leadership of Daniel Jones. In 1883 the settlement was named Lehi for a Book of Mormon leader. Lehi is now a part of Mesa, Arizona. The Shill's established a farm on North Mesa Drive, close to the Salt River, a tributary of the Gila River.
Family history recorded that Andrew Jensen, Church Historian was in the Mesa vicinity visiting from Utah on Sunday, May 13, 1894. That night he spent in the home of Charles Goulding Shill, and talking to his 14 year-old son Wright. Jensen told the boy how he had been keeping a daily journal of his life since he was a teenage boy and encouraged Wright to do the same. Wright was inspired by Jensen's remarks and at age 15 commenced a daily record of his life and the community in which he lived, that continued for the next 77 years, matching the record of Bro. Jensen.
Wright's journal has come in very handy at times when someone wanted to find information about a certain event that happened or a person's role in the event. Earl Merrill, a Lehi, Arizona native, and author of the "One Hundred..." series books about life in Mesa -- often referred to Wright's journals for information and details. Also several of Wright's friends have searched the journals for reminders and memories. The autobiography of Wright Paynter Shill is a great source of pride to his many descendants. There is, however, one descendant who claims the Autobiography as her own, that individual has selfishly demanded that this entire web page be removed so she can use the materials for a book she wants to publish and from which she will personally profit.
We know there are other Shill family members who have copies of Wright's journals, and that those journals, or at least portions of them have been posted on the Internet in the past. If you have these materials please share them with us. Contact: firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss placing Wright's life's work and interesting history here to share on our family site . Thank you.

Wright's Autobiography was transcribed by Olga Svob Shill, wife of George Rothrock Shill., son of WPS Sr. This work took many years and we want to show our appreciation for her efforts and contribution to family history. Wright's efforts to write his Autobiography for seven decades, and Olga's years of dedication to transcribe them are here provided to honor their work for his and Elizabeth Macdonald's descendants.
